Step 1: Prepare the Roast
Put the chuck roast in a baking dish or Dutch oven.
The problem is… it simply doesn’t work.
Step 2: Flavor it up
Spread the roast with the cream of celery soup.
Sprinkle onion soup mix evenly over the top.
Step 3: Hide it
Cover tightly with a lid or with foil.
Keep the moisture in to keep the roast juicy.
Step 4: Cooking
Bake at 150°C / 300°F for 3½ – 4½ hours.
Check at the bottom. The meat should fall apart easily when forked.
Step 5: Serve
- Slice or shred the roast.
- Pour the gravy over the top and serve hot.
Small Kitchen Notes
- Use a Dutch oven to keep the roast super tender.
- Mashed potatoes work well to sop up gravy.
- If you want a full meal you can cook carrots or potatoes nicely in the same dish.
- The leftovers are even better the next day.
Conclusion
I keep this recipe in rotation because it’s so simple. No fuss, no muss, no long list of ingredients. Just a few basics that make a good meal of comfort with the oven doing its thing.
And to tell the truth, that’s the kind of dinner most everyone remembers, and asks for again.
